Align That EQ Shelf, & Vocalise Yourself

The nature of many of our talented artists representing a local music scene within NAARM/Melbourne means that we always have time in our schedule to make sure they are locking in their unique voices. This week, have a look at the ways South Bound is treating and enhancing the voices of our esteemed artists.

As may be incredibly evident from our photos, the microphone of choice, almost without saying, is the legendary Neumann U87. Its status as the premier choice for bright, airy and focused vocals precedes itself. Next in line, our pre-amps of choice give us either the API 212L or the Neve 1073. It is only a minor coincidence the brightness of all our artists' vocals is compounded by the choice of equipment we have, which must be said works very well in everyone's favour. It must also be mentioned that swij is our one exception in his choice of microphone being an arguably even brighter AKG C414.

In this same train of thought and practice, what better to hit the vocals on the way in than good old 1176 compression. Used almost universally across our vocal recordings to different levels of gain reduction depending, having a Universal Audio 1176LN was not an opportunity we could give up upon. Given the nature of modern vocal recording techniques however we decided to have most of our processing done in-the-box, as manual editing and compiling must make way for future artistic effects. Everything from a little application of Melodyne, to all the reverbs, delays, parallel compression and more made it so that we mostly applied only a bit of hardware compression on the way in.
