The (String) Theory of Everything

Written by Shan Zhi Liu 21/02/2024

This is a Public Service Announcement. Amadeus needs more limelight with our good camera for we have nothing more to see of this man.

That being said South Bound this week has made plenty of moves to be discussed in threads: guitar strings, bass strings, and imaginary synthy piano strings.

Amadeus, Dallas and Julian as the guitarists in the group have a collective knowledge of guitars that put them to infinity and beyond (at least relative to a certain blog post writer), and they have a knowledgable collection of guitars and gear to boot.

Amadeus brought out his Cort Solo Series "Superstrat" from the late 90's. A Hotone Ampero MK1 multifx modelling pedal provided some funky effects when tracking some especially unique lead guitars.

Dallas showed up with his Fender Telecaster that pairs with his Fender Hot Rod for a spread of guitar tones. Alongside some electric sounds, he also brought out his acoustic guitar, a Sigma 000M-15.

A combination of microphones placed in what Dallas describes as a typical "Nashville-style placement" blends together for our desired sound characteristic. The SM57 remains the centrepiece of our microphones as the revered microphone for guitar amps. Within this initial stage of recordings, there was also a desire to explore different sounds.

The sound of the room is something I proposed capturing with the Royer 121's with one fairly distant and one at the back of the room. A little experimentation never hurt anyone after all.

A bright and happy Neumann U87 took the main stage alongside the SM57's. Later recordings in the week saw the Royer's taking on the brunt of the amp alongside our SM57's with the U87 taking some distance instead. Testing the use of these wholly different sound characteristics was key to creating personalised sounds while only using roughly the same guitar equipment elsewhere.

Drums, Bass and Guitar pave the foundation upon a path to success for us, especially upon our journey to bring all of you for the ride as well. If you want to learn more or like the work we do please consider following us on our website and socials.

As always, inviting you down under. 🇦🇺
